Woman Struck and Killed After Saving Baby By a Riverside Train

October 9, 2011 - According to reports a woman was struck and killed after saving her child from being hit by the train. According to the Riverside Coroner’s Office the woman was identified as 33 year old Susan Dibene.

According to Riverside Police Lt. Jaybee Brennan the accident occurred at approximately 6:58 p.m. on Saturday when the woman was pushing her daughter in a stroller south on Mary Street.

Lt. Brennan stated that the safety arms came down, signaling a train was approaching and Dibene attempted to cross the tracks ahead of the train to Indiana Avenue. A wheel of the stroller became caught and the mother was able to get the wheel free and push the stroller to safety.

Dibene was struck by the Metrolink train and pronounced dead at the scene. The child was found by Sandra Castillo, who got the baby to safety from traffic. Castillo stated that she only saw the unattended stroller and the train going by. The baby was transported to Riverside Community Hospital, she was found to be uninjured and released to her grandmother.

Passengers riding the Metrolink train that was on its route from Oceanside to San Bernardino were offered alternate transportation after the death of a mother accident.

Man Killed in Santa Ana Hit and Run- Dragged Between 70 and 90 Feet

October 4, 2011 - According to reports a man was killed in a Santa Ana hit and run, then dragged between 70 and 90 feet. According to Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna a 33 year old man was struck and killed in the 100 block of South Newhope Street in the vicinity of First Street at approximately 12:30 a.m.

According to witnesses a man was lying in the street, a witness stated she pulled over at a liquor store to check on the man, when he was struck by a dark sedan. The woman stated that the man was dragged between 40 and 50 feet, according to Cpl. Bertagna.
According to Cpl. Bertagna, two of four occupants in the sedan got out and checked on the man and left him in the street, leaving the scene.

A silver Honda Civic then struck the man and dragged him approximately 30 to 40 feet. Santa Ana police said this driver also failed to stop. They later found the vehicle and the female driver stated she did not know she hit the man. Cpl. Bertagna stated that the Honda was impounded for evidence.

According to Santa Ana police traffic investigators are attempting to determine why the man was lying in the street at the time he was hit. The name of the 33 year old man has not been released, pending a positive identification and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
