June 28, 2010-According to reports the weekend was deadly for two California Highway Patrol Officers. The first deadly accident occurred on Sunday morning near Barstow, when the California Highway Patrol officer was making a traffic stop. The officer identified as Justin McGrory was struck by a vehicle that veered over to the side where McGrory had a vehicle pulled over for a traffic stop for speeding in the vicinity of Hodge Road.
The officer was standing outside of the vehicle when he was struck by Rafael Garcia age 18 of Las Vegas. Garcia was arrested for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and could face additional charges after the results of toxicology test are received.
According to California Highway Patrol officer Mario Lopez stated Garcia was remorseful at the scene of the accident and was cooperative with investigators. After being struck by Garcia’s vehicle on Interstate 15 McGrory was airlifted to St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley where he died from the injuries he sustained in the crash. A second California Highway Patrol officer was struck and killed Sunday in Paso Robles. The accident occurred at approximately 5:47 p.m. in the vicinity of River Road and Spanish Camp Road.
The officer was identified as California Highway Patrol officer Brett Oswald age 47.The California Highway Patrol officer had responded to an abandoned vehicle and was waiting for a tow truck. Officer Oswald was struck by a Toyota Corolla traveling at a high rate of speed around a curve and collided with the cruiser, according to CHP Officer Mike Muell.
During the collision Oswald was thrown in the air landing on the Toyota. Oswald was transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, where he died. The officer was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m.
