California Nurses Association Files Complaint—Hospital Uses Faulty Narcotics Pumps

July 11, 2009 (By Horatio Algren) According to reports the California Nurses Association has filed a complaint to the Department of Public Health in connection with the use of faulty narcotics pumps.

The complaint that was filed reportedly names the UC Irvine Hospital, stating that there have been at least five incidences with faulty pain control pumps accidentally overdosing the five patients. They also stated that none of the patients died or sustained lasting injuries from the narcotics over doses. Elder abuse attorneys have been tracking this story.

The UC Irvin Hospital has admitted to several of the overdoses, but has claimed they are no longer using the faulty pumps.

The complaint filed by the California Nursing Association states the hospital was aware of the potential dangers of the pumps and is recorded in several nursing memos. This includes one stating they did not have the software for the pumps that is available to protect the patients. The complaint also alleges that the hospital was aware of the faulty pumps and continued to use them and that hospital administrators did not report the overdoses to state regulators.

These is not the only question’s that have been raised about patient safety, in May the facility was fined $50,000 by the State Department of Public Health for two violations that resulted in patient deaths.

The couple’s 7-month-old daughter had become trapped between the spaces that are the reason for the recall on the crib. The parents Joe and Anna say they saw the baby’s arms and legs flailing while her head was trapped against the mattress.

Her mother freed their daughter Gabriella who was pinned upside down and when they dismantled the Simplicity crib to return it to the retail store it was purchased the other hardware broke on the drop door. This Joe Silva explains happened just from lowering the drop door.

Silva learned upon returning it to the store where it was purchased that the Simplicity crib they had purchased was one of the ones that had been recalled.
