According to incoming reports by Chatsworth train accident attorneys, there was an accident today at approximately 4:32 p.m. between a freight train and a Metrolink commuter train.
According to Inspector Ron Haralson of the Los Angeles Fire Department, one of the passenger cars of the commuter train rolled on its side during the collision and firefighters had to battle a fire under some of the wreckage.
Haralson went on to say that he is certain there are injuries, many injuries and firemen extracted passengers through one of the cars that were torn open in the crash.

Although the immediate cause of this accident was undoubtedly human error, a significant amount of the responsibility belongs to Mayor Villaraigosa who assured his constituents in the early stages of the Metrolink project of robust fail safes designed into the systems which would eliminate the possibility of exactly this kind of accident. Even though it seemed obvious that the risk of a collision was high when track was shared by trains traveling in opposing directions, Mayor Villaraigosa quelled concerns about this risk by describing a system of fail safes which included automated switching of trains on tracks, early warning feedback devices to detect danger of approaching trains on same tracks, and emergency alarms to the conductors of these trains as well as automated control of trains on collision course which would stop them if such an event were to occur. So, if these alleged safeguards are for real, how did this happen? Either Mayor Villaraigosa lied to his constituents, or these acclaimed fail safes weren't adequately tested. If he were truly sincere in concern for public safety Mayor Villaraigosa would have assured these systems were tested and would work; I suspect his real concern was in convincing the public to support funding for the Metrolink, which was his pet project at that time, and a potential political feather in his cap if it proved successful.
I am no fan of that mayor. His buddy, City Attorney Rock Delgadillo is under investigation by the FBI.
On September 15, 2008, the North County Transit District expressed its condolences to the victims of the Chatsworth Metrolink accident, in its “Rider Alert” and basically proved beyond a shadow of a doubt - perhaps not on purpose that the Chatsworth Metrolink Train was negligent. On its online “NCTD Commuter Alert”, NCTD discussed the fact that the “commuter train and a freight train in the Chatsworth area of Los Angeles” would not have occurred if it had in place the same, cheap, basic safety program that is currently in place in San Diego.
