Calaveras County Fair Ride Collapses Severely Injuring Three

May 18, 2008 - There have been reports that Friday evening at approximately 6:00 p.m. there were two girls and one woman severely injured after a carnival ride called the Yo-Yo collapsed at the Calaveras County Fair.

According to statements by Calaveras County Sheriffs Sgt. Dave Seawell, there were other riders that were also injured and transported to nearby hospitals, they numbered as many as twenty-one. The Cal Fire officials stated that these injuries were less severe than the woman and two girls and Sgt. Seawell stated that they were a 12 year old, a 14 year old and a 20-year-old woman.

The ride involved named the Yo-Yo is a ride that has seating that swings out while the center of the ride spins. The arms are made with chains and according to witnesses one of the chains broke and the ride had been making a grinding noise prior to the accident.

One witness who aided one of the injured victims stated that people were calling out for help as officials arrived at the scene.

Mark Twain Hospital in San Andreas spokesperson Jessica Norris an emergency room clerk stated that they were treating five of the injured victims.
