Family Files Claim Against Orange County In Police Shooting of a Marine

March 8, 2012 - According to reports the family of a Marine that was shot and killed by police has filed a lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed against Orange County and the Orange County Sheriff’s deputy in the shooting death of Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins. The lawsuit also alleges that Loggins two daughters ages 9 and 14 were held by police for 13 hours without allowing them to call adult family members, after their father was fatally shot in front of them.

According to Los Angeles attorney Brian Dunn with the Cochran Firm, the girls were detained at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in a custodial setting and were not told they were free to leave. They also were not permitted to contact adult family members.

The lawsuit names Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Sandberg and other deputies.
According to Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens he shooting remains under investigation by the District Attorney’s Office and would not make further comment.
The shooting occurred before 5:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the San Clemente High School, attorney Dunn said and the children were not permitted to speak with their mother until 6:00 p.m. They were not told their father was killed, but told he was in the hospital.

Dunn said they do not know what the line of questioning was, but being held for 13 hours, without being let go is his definition of false imprisonment. The lawsuit that was filed in the February 7th shooting includes wrongful death, negligence, battery, negligent hiring, negligent training, negligent supervision, intentional infliction of emotional distress, retention, assault, emotional distress, false imprisonment and civil rights violations.

According to Orange County Sheriff’s officials, Loggins crashed the GMC Yukon SUV he was driving through a fence at the San Clemente High School, and then got out of the vehicle making irrational statements. Then got back in the vehicle with his daughters in the back seat and was shot repeatedly.

Initial reports said the deputy feared for his life, and was later changed to he feared for the 9 and 14 year old girls that were in the back seat of the SUV. According to Huchens the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is fully cooperating with the District Attorney’s Office.

Packaging Error Causes Birth Control Pill Recall

February 28, 2012- According to reports a packaging error caused a recall to be issued for birth control pills. According to Glenmark Generics they have voluntarily issued a recall for birth control pills that were packaged improperly. The packaging error the company believes could lead to dosing errors and in some cases unwanted pregnancies.
Glenmark said the recall involves seven lots of ethingyl estradiol and norgestimate birth control pills.

The India based company said that the pills were provided to United States pharmacies between the months of September and December 2011. The number of affected packages has not been released by Glenmark.

The packaging error involves a change in the order that the pills were placed in the package, which contains three types of birth control pills with different levels of hormones that should be taken during the menstrual cycle.

According to Glenmark this error on the recalled packages rotated the card 180 degrees, which reversed the weekly pills that should be taken.

The birth control company said that the lot number and expiration date are only visible on the outer patch. The numbers of the affected lots that Glenmark has issued a recall for include:

Glenmark said women using these birth control pills should switch to another form of birth control, while it does not pose a health risk it might not prevent pregnancy.

Daughter Calls for Help When Father Drives the Wrong Way On Pacific Coast Highway

February 21, 2012 - According to reports a man’s daughter called authorities when her father was driving the wrong way on Pacific Coast Highway.

According to Orange Sheriff’s Department Lt. Dan Dwyer, reports of the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Pacific Coast Highway of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

The driver’s daughter took her father’s cell phone and called 911, after her father identified as a 46 year old began driving the wrong way on the Pacific Coast Highway. Lt. Dwyer said the man had his two daughters in a Volkswagen, ages 5 and 7, he said the call to authorities that the 7 year old girl made helped deputies find the vehicle.

He said that one of the girls helped to steer the Volkswagen, while dispatchers told the girl that help was on the way and said that she was well composed and spoke clearly. The girl named businesses that they were passing, Lt. Dwyer said. According to Lt. Dwyer a medical episode caused the man to drive the wrong way. Once the vehicle was found stopped at a red light, still traveling in the wrong direction, paramedics assisted the man.

Lt. Dwyer said that there were no crashes involved in the incident and the driver and his daughters were picked up by family members. The medical incident was reported to be a diabetic episode.

Teachers Aide Arrested for Suspicion of Intention to Commit Sexual Molestation

February 14, 2012 - According to reports a teacher’s aide has been arrested for suspicion of intending to commit a sexual crime.

According to the South Los Angeles Police Department a teacher’s aide at the South Los Angeles Fremont High School has been arrested and is suspected of allegedly contacting a student with intentions of committing a sexual offense.

The teacher’s aide has been identified as Alain Salas, who worked as a teacher’s aide and a girl’s volleyball coach at the Fremont High School.

According to authorities Salas allegedly contacted the student in person and over the internet with the intention of committing a sexual offense.

LAUSD Superintendant John Deasy said that they have 100,000 full and part time employees and when the administration is aware of alleged misconduct they will take action. Deasy said that some people will make bad choices.

Suspected Street Racer Crashes into Car Fatally Injuring a Woman

February 10, 2012 - According to reports a woman was killed in an accident that is suspected to have been caused by street racers.

According to the California Highway Patrol the accident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. at Boyle Street and 4th Street in Boyle Heights.

California Highway Patrol officials said the accident occurred after two drivers were racing on the I-5 Freeway and exited onto the surface streets in Boyle Heights.

Both drivers ran a red light, with one of them hitting the woman’s car that caught fire after the impact.

According to firefighters they had to use the Jaws of Life to extract the woman from the vehicle.

The identity of the woman that was fatally injured and died later has not been released, CHP officials said.

Hit and Run Victim Dragged About 150 Feet in Fontana

February 9, 2012 - According to reports a hit and run victim was dragged approximately 150 feet in Fontana.

According to the California Highway Patrol the hit and run accident occurred in the 13800 block of Arrow Highway in the vicinity of the Fontana Gardens Apartments on Wednesday evening.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Ron Burch said that the victim of the hit and run has been identified as Dennis Kelly Timms age 61.

Sgt. Burch said that Timms was crossing the street in the 138000 block of Arrow Highway to go to a convenience store when he was struck.

The vehicle that struck Timms continued going, dragging the man approximately 150 before stopping and then continuing on.

The California Highway Patrol believes the hit and run vehicle could have been a champagne colored Lincoln Navigator.

Timms was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP officials.
